Everything you need to know about using Quick Share on your PC

Quick Share (previously called Nearby Share) is Google's built-in file sharing feature for Android devices and Windows PCs. Think of it like Apple's AirDrop, but for the Android ecosystem. It creates a direct wireless connection between your devices using Bluetooth for discovery and Wi-Fi Direct for the actual file transfer, which is why it's so fast and doesn't require an internet connection.

Absolutely! Quick Share is developed and maintained by Google as part of their Android ecosystem. There are no premium features locked behind a paywall, no file size limits, no daily transfer caps, and definitely no ads. It's completely free for personal and business use, and Google has no plans to monetize it.

Unfortunately, Quick Share officially requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a 64-bit processor. Your PC also needs to have both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities. If you're using Windows 7 or 8, you might want to consider alternatives like Google Drive or a USB cable for file transfers.

As of now, Google hasn't released an official Quick Share app for macOS. However, there's a fantastic community-built alternative called NearDrop that lets you receive files from Android devices on your Mac. Check out our Mac download page for detailed instructions on setting that up.

Great question! Earlier, Samsung had their own version called Samsung Quick Share, while Google had Nearby Share. The two companies decided to merge these technologies into a unified solution. Now, Samsung phones use Samsung's version (available on Microsoft Store), while all other Android devices use Google's version. Both are fully compatible with each other.

Here's the cool part — you don't need internet at all! Quick Share creates its own private network between your devices using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct. So even if you're on a remote camping trip with zero cell service, you can still share files between your phone and laptop as long as both have batteries.

Virtually anything! Photos (JPG, PNG, HEIC), videos (MP4, MOV, 4K files), documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX), music files (MP3, FLAC), Android apps (APK files), and even complete folders with all their contents. The best part? Files transfer at their original quality with zero compression.

Quick Share gives you full control over your visibility. You can set it to "Hidden" so no one can discover you, "Contacts Only" so only people you know can send you files, or "Everyone" for 10 minutes when you're actively expecting a transfer. All transfers require your explicit approval — nobody can send you files without your permission.
